Baseball5 is an urban, fast-paced, and inclusive version of baseball and softball. Developed by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), the game was created to make bat-and-ball sports more accessible to people around the world. It can be played anywhere with minimal equipment—all you need is a small rubber ball and a flat surface.
The Origin of Baseball5
Baseball5 is an official sport developed from the south american street versions of baseball, namely Pelotica de Goma from Venezuela and Cuatro Esquinas from Cuba. Those street adaptations of Baseball were popular with kids, because the game could be played on the street with whatever ball you had available. The playing field dimensions varied from street to street depending on the space the kids had available. But common to all versions of this street game was that the ball was “slapped” with the palm of the hand, instead of being hit with a bat.
WBSC took great inspiration from these street games and developed them into a fully developed sport. Although there are rigid rules for the field dimensions in official tournaments, the WBSC still kept the spirit of the south american street games by adding into the rules that outside official tournaments, you can change the dimensions of the field so that it fits best to the area you have available.
The Basics of Baseball5
Baseball5 is played by two teams of five players each on a square field measuring 21 meters on each side. The game has five innings, with each team getting a turn at offense and defense per inning.
Instead of bats and gloves, players use their bare hands to hit and catch the ball. The batter starts the play by hitting the ball with their hand into the field of play. Once the ball is hit, they run counterclockwise around four bases. The goal is to make it all the way around the bases and back to home plate to score a run.
The defensive team tries to get three outs to end the inning. An out can be made by:
- Catching a hit ball before it bounces.
- Getting the ball to a base before the runner arrives (a force out).
- Tagging a runner with the ball when they are not on a base (tag out).
Why is Baseball5 so great?
The beauty of Baseball5 lies in its simplicity and accessibility. It’s a sport that embodies the spirit of play, bringing people together regardless of their location, age, or gender.
- Accessible and Affordable: Since it requires no bats, gloves, or a dedicated field, Baseball5 removes the financial and logistical barriers that often come with traditional baseball. You can play it on the street, in a park, or on a basketball court. This “play everywhere” philosophy has made it incredibly popular in urban areas and in countries with limited sports infrastructure.
- Fast-Paced and Dynamic: With only five players per team and a quick, five-inning structure, a game of Baseball5 can be completed in just 15-20 minutes. The pace is high-energy, with a constant need for quick reflexes, teamwork, and strategy.
- Inclusive: A core principle of Baseball5 is inclusivity. Competitive teams are required to be mixed-gender, with a minimum number of male and female players on the field at all times. This makes it a great way to promote gender equality and teamwork.
- Promotes Baseball to a new audience: While some purists may argue that it’s not “real” baseball, Baseball5 serves as an excellent introduction to the fundamental concepts of bat-and-ball sports. It teaches teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship. Baseball5 is of a much higher intensity than traditional baseball, which I believe can be appealing to a new target audience.
Baseball5 has already been recognized as a sport at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar 2026, and its popularity continues to grow. It’s a sport that proves the essence of baseball can be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere.
